Nanny Question

Ok web friends, I need some help and advice. I have found a nanny that is willing to work with our crazy schedule and watch my kids. The craziness is that because of husband's pilot schedule, some weeks it's only 3 days, some weeks 2 days and some only 1. But I am allowing this nanny to bring her 2-year-old daughter with her. So she would be watching my 1 and 3-year-old's and also her 2-year-old. She has been J's teacher at daycare for about 8 months now (up until last week), so he knows her, as do I. Her daughter was in S's class, so she also knows her.

So this leads to my question. For her hourly rate, do I get to pay her less because she is bringing her daughter with her? Her daughter's needs will most certainly be taking up some of her time, being that she's only 2. But I am having the convenience of having someone come to my house.

Thoughts? I am clueless on this whole nanny thing.

Thanks!!!
V

  1. Hmmm... That is a hard one.

On one hand, if she excels at her job and is great with children, and her own child doesn't interfere with the care she gives to yours, I suppose that she deserves to be compensated for her time fairly. It is hard to find people who are good with children.

But on the other hand, her child could be eating your food, using your utilities, and perhaps distract her from minding your kids. It's a tough call.

Maybe pay her a bit less to begin to see how it works out, and give her a raise if she meets your expectations of a nanny that wouldn't have bought her own child. ???

    That's a tough one.

  2. I'm a nanny (well, not currently working, but whatever), and I would expect to be paid about a dollar/hour less for bringing my son along. Even less money if my kiddo is an infant, taking even more time from the children I'm watching. I like the suggestion from the other comment about starting lower, but offering a raise if it appears that having her child along doesn't disrupt things at all.

  3. I would pay her what she is worth, and her bringing a child along shouldn't effect her rate. I am a firm believer of generous compensation...it keeps the employee happy and working hard.

Now, if the child eats your food that ia another thing, but I wouldn't work that in her compensation. Make her bring her own food, or something like that?
